Case Study: From a Simple Idea to an Amazon Bestseller

An inside look at the STARTINAL ODM process and how we helped a client dominate their niche with a custom-designed baby scooter.

An exciting and uniquely designed dinosaur-themed baby scooter, representing a successful custom product.

The Client’s Challenge: Escaping the “Me-Too” Market

Our client, a promising e-commerce brand specializing in children’s products, faced a common but critical problem: their Amazon store was filled with generic, private-label items. While profitable, they were stuck in a cycle of price wars and fierce competition with dozens of other sellers offering nearly identical products.

Their goal was ambitious: to launch a truly unique product that would not only sell well but also build their brand’s reputation for creativity and quality. They had an idea for a character-themed baby scooter but lacked the design and manufacturing expertise to bring it to life. They were worried about communication barriers, quality control, and the risk of a large investment not paying off.

The Solution: A Collaborative ODM Partnership with STARTINAL

After finding us and vetting our capabilities, the client chose to partner with STARTINAL for our full ODM (Original Design Manufacturing) service. Our process is designed to be transparent, collaborative, and risk-mitigating. Here’s how we turned their vision into a physical product.

1 Concept & Consultation

The client’s idea was simple but brilliant: a “DinoRider,” a baby scooter themed after a friendly Triceratops. This aligned perfectly with one of the key 2026 design trends: character-driven customization. In our initial video calls, we discussed the target age group, desired features (like light-up wheels), safety requirements, and budget. Our team provided initial feedback on manufacturability and potential cost-saving adjustments.

2 Design & 3D Prototyping

Our industrial designers translated the client’s concept into professional 2D renderings. After a few revisions, we moved to the most critical phase: 3D rapid prototyping. Using our in-house 3D printers, we created a physical, scaled model of the “DinoRider.” We shipped this model directly to the client.

This step is a game-changer. It removes all guesswork and allows the client to see, touch, and feel their product before committing to the expensive mold-making process. For more on the value of this technology, check out this article on rapid prototyping.

3 Mold Creation & Sample Confirmation

With the 3D model approved, we began tooling the custom injection molds. This is the most significant investment in any ODM project. Our 30+ years of experience ensure that molds are engineered for durability and precision. Once the mold was complete, we produced the first “off-the-tool” sample in the client’s chosen Pantone colors. This final sample was sent for approval, confirming every detail was perfect.

4 Mass Production & Quality Assurance

Upon sample confirmation, our factory initiated mass production. Every stage was monitored under our strict ISO 9001 quality management system. Our process includes:

  • Incoming Material Inspection: Verifying all raw plastics meet EN71 & ASTM F963 safety standards.
  • In-Process QC: Checks at multiple points on the assembly line.
  • 100% Full Inspection: Every finished “DinoRider” was inspected for appearance, function, and safety before packaging.
This rigorous approach helps our clients avoid the quality-related nightmares common in international sourcing.

The Results: A Market-Defining Success Story

The “DinoRider” launched on Amazon and the results exceeded all expectations. By creating a unique, high-quality, and imaginative product, the client was able to command a premium price and differentiate themselves completely.

Questions About Your Own ODM Project?

Do I need to be a professional designer to start an ODM project?

Not at all. You only need a clear idea or a simple sketch. Our experienced design team will work with you to turn that concept into a professional, manufacturable design. That’s the core of our “co-development” service.

What is the typical cost for creating a new mold?

The cost of an injection mold varies significantly based on its size, complexity, and the number of cavities. A mold for a product like a baby scooter can range from $5,000 to $15,000 USD. While this is a one-time investment, it’s what gives you a proprietary product that no one else can sell.

How do you protect my intellectual property (IP)?

We take IP protection very seriously. We are always willing to sign a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) before any sensitive details are shared. Your unique design belongs to you, and we are here to manufacture it exclusively for your brand.
