From Napkin Sketch to Mass Production

Our Co-creative ODM Process for Brands Seeking Unique, Market-Defining Developmental Toys.

Every groundbreaking product starts with an idea. But how do you transform a concept—a sketch on a napkin, a market gap you’ve identified, a unique play feature you’ve envisioned—into a tangible, high-quality, and commercially successful toy? This is the journey of Original Design Manufacturing (ODM), and it’s where true innovation is born.

Unlike OEM, which focuses on speed and existing designs (a process we’ve perfected for private label launches), ODM is a deep, collaborative partnership. It’s for the visionary brand that wants to own its intellectual property and create something truly new. The success of this journey hinges on selecting the right manufacturing partner, a crucial decision we break down in our comprehensive guide to choosing a manufacturer. Here, we’ll detail our proven, six-stage process for turning your vision into a reality.

The STARTINAL ODM Journey: Your 6-Stage Path to Creation

We’ve structured our ODM process for clarity, collaboration, and control, ensuring you are involved at every critical milestone from initial idea to final production.

Stage 1: Concept & Feasibility Analysis

You bring us your idea. Our engineering and design teams review your concept, sketches, or functional requirements. We provide critical feedback on manufacturing feasibility, material selection, potential cost implications, and preliminary safety considerations.

Stage 2: Industrial Design & 3D Modeling

Our designers translate your vision into professional 2D renderings and, subsequently, a precise 3D CAD (Computer-Aided Design) model. You review these digital models, providing feedback for revisions until the design perfectly matches your expectations.

Stage 3: Rapid Prototyping (3D Printing)

This is where your idea becomes physical. We use our in-house 3D printers to create a functional prototype. This allows you to hold your product, test its ergonomics, and approve the design before committing to expensive tooling. It’s a vital, risk-reducing step.

Stage 4: Mold Creation (Tooling)

Upon prototype approval, we begin crafting the high-precision steel injection molds. This is the most significant investment in the ODM process, requiring expert engineering. For a deep dive into mold engineering, resources like Protolabs offer excellent insights. We manage this entire complex stage for you.

Stage 5: First Article Inspection (FAI) & Certification

We produce the first units from the new mold (the “first articles”). These are rigorously inspected by our QA team and sent to you for final sign-off. Simultaneously, we submit these samples for mandatory safety testing to achieve EN71, ASTM F963, and other required certifications. We detail this in our guide to uncompromising quality control.

Stage 6: Mass Production & Logistics

With your final approval and all certifications in hand, we launch full-scale mass production. Our factory’s capacity and ISO 9001 processes ensure every unit is identical to the approved sample. We then manage final assembly, packaging, and logistics to deliver your unique product to your warehouse.

The STARTINAL Partnership Advantage

Choosing an ODM partner is about more than just manufacturing capability; it’s about trust, expertise, and a shared vision.

IP Protection & Confidentiality

Your idea is your most valuable asset. We operate under strict Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) from day one. The final design and tooling are your exclusive property. Your trust is our foundation.

30+ Years of Material & Engineering Expertise

We guide you in selecting the perfect materials for durability, safety, and cost-effectiveness. Our deep experience in rotational and injection molding ensures your product is not only well-designed but also built to last.

Transparent Costing & Communication

We provide a clear, itemized breakdown of costs, including tooling, unit price, and certification fees. You will have a dedicated project manager who provides regular updates, ensuring you are always informed.

ODM Frequently Asked Questions

Who owns the intellectual property and the mold?

You do. For any ODM project, the client (you) retains 100% ownership of the design’s intellectual property and the physical mold. We are your manufacturing partner, not an owner of your idea. This is guaranteed in our partnership agreement.

What is the typical cost for a new toy mold?

Mold (tooling) costs can vary significantly based on the product’s size, complexity, and number of cavities. A simple mold might start from a few thousand dollars, while a large, complex mold could be tens of thousands. We provide a precise, transparent quote after the 3D design is finalized.

How long does the entire ODM process take?

A typical ODM project timeline from initial design to shipment is approximately 4 to 6 months. This depends heavily on design complexity, the number of revisions, and mold creation time. We will provide you with a detailed projected timeline at the start of the project.

Can you also help if my product requires electronic components?

While our primary expertise is in plastic molding for developmental toys, our “Wenzhou Advantage” means we have a vast network of audited partner factories. We can manage the sourcing and integration of simple electronic components (like lights or sounds) as part of your overall ODM project, acting as your one-stop solution.
