Your ODM Project: The Numbers & The Timeline
A transparent breakdown of the critical factors in any Original Design Manufacturing project: Minimum Order Quantity (MOQ), Mold Investment, and Project Timeline.
You’ve identified a market opportunity and outlined the criteria for your ideal manufacturing partner. Now, it’s time to translate your vision into a concrete plan. This stage is where the abstract becomes tangible, involving key commercial and logistical decisions. Let’s break down the three most common questions we receive from new B2B partners to give you clarity and confidence.
Demystifying the MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity)
MOQ isn’t an arbitrary number; it’s a reflection of manufacturing efficiency. Setting up large-scale machinery like injection molders and sourcing raw materials in bulk requires a minimum production run to be cost-effective.
For an ODM toddler floor scooter, an industry-standard MOQ typically ranges from 1,000 to 3,000 units. This can depend on the complexity of the design and the number of custom colors.
STARTINAL’s Flexibility: We understand that new product launches carry risk. We work with our partners to find solutions, such as allowing the MOQ to be split across different color variations to enable broader market testing with a single production run.
Understanding Mold Cost: Your One-Time Investment
The mold is the heart of your unique ODM product. It’s a custom-built tool, typically from high-grade steel, that shapes the molten plastic into your scooter’s components. This is a one-time investment that grants you market exclusivity.
A high-quality, durable mold for a product with the complexity of a toddler scooter can range from $5,000 to $15,000 USD. The final cost depends on size, intricacy, and the required lifespan of the mold.
Your Asset: At STARTINAL, we are unequivocal: the mold belongs 100% to you. It is your intellectual property, and we safeguard it exclusively for your production. For a deeper dive into the technical aspects of this process, resources like Plastics Technology Online offer great insight.
Standard ODM Project Timeline: Idea to Port
Phase 1: Design & 3D Modeling
Timeline: 1-2 Weeks
We convert your ideas, sketches, and requirements into detailed 2D and 3D designs for your approval.
Phase 2: Mold Manufacturing
Timeline: 4-6 Weeks
Once the 3D design is confirmed, our engineers begin crafting the steel mold. This is the most time-intensive phase.
Phase 3: First Sample (T1) & Revisions
Timeline: 1-2 Weeks
We produce the first samples from the new mold. You test them for function, feel, and appearance. We iterate based on your feedback.
Phase 4: Mass Production
Timeline: 3-4 Weeks
Upon final sample approval, we begin your first full production run, adhering to our strict ISO 9001 quality controls.
Phase 5: Final QC, Assembly & Packing
Timeline: 1 Week
Every unit undergoes final inspection. Products are assembled, packaged in your custom boxes, and prepared for shipping.
Total Estimated Timeline: Approx. 10-15 weeks from design lock to shipment-ready.
Completing Your Strategy

Your Questions, Answered
Can I pay for the ODM mold in installments?
Yes, we offer a flexible payment structure for mold development to support our partners. Typically, this is a 50% upfront payment to begin the engineering and manufacturing of the mold, and the remaining 50% is due upon your approval of the first successful sample (T1).
What happens if the first sample (T1) isn’t perfect?
This is a normal and expected part of the ODM process. It’s why we have revision phases (T2, T3, etc.). We will work closely with you to identify the necessary adjustments, make modifications to the mold, and produce new samples until the product perfectly matches your vision. Your satisfaction is the goal.
Do you sign an NDA before we discuss our product idea?
Absolutely. We consider client confidentiality paramount. We are happy to review and sign your Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) before you share any proprietary details about your project. This ensures your intellectual property, a topic well-covered by organizations like the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), is protected from the very first conversation.
